Spring Magnolia

My studio in Rhode Island is surrounded by a historic garden. The first flowers of the season in the garden were from this ‘gnarly dude’ tree that flowered with ribbons of cream, palest pink and soft golds. The volunteer gardener mentioned it was a Magnolia Stellata, over 80 years old, as she handed me a cutting. This tree was magnificent in flower and after a grey winter made me very happy. So, I painted it!
